Translated as “From My Aquarium”, this book is the first photography book by the young Dutch artist Bas Fontein. While taking these pictures, he claims that he felt himself to be submerged in an aquarium, looking out at the world. Divided into five segments of five double page full bleed images, the artist directs the viewer to read them as one would stanzas in a poem.

The artist’s childhood fascination with fish clearly inspired his artistic practice as an adult as evidenced by the note reproduced on the book’s back cover. Inscribed his brother on the first page of “Elseviers Guide for the Aquarium Lover”:

“For Sebastian Fontein who is celebrating his fourteenth birthday today. He studied his fish for so long that he almost became a fish himself, therefore this book is for a true expert.”
