Printed Matter was founded when a small group of art workers came together with a vision to bring a new form called “artists’ books” out into the world and into the fabric of everyday life—or as co-founder Lucy Lippard put it, “ensconced in supermarkets, drugstores and airports.”

Today, forty years later, we like to think that in many ways this vision is being realized. We carry publications by 5,000 artists, distribute 40,000 publications and related material annually, and each year over 150,000 visitors come to discover and explore artists’ books at our storefront and at our NY and LA Art Book Fairs. We’re proud to be a part of the broad and vibrant community that now makes up the field of artists’ books.

Please join us in celebrating our 40th anniversary by joining as a Member. Your support will help kick off the next 40 years in our new space on 11th Avenue.
