Chairs, those comfortable backed-seats, are a vital part of daily life (we’re sitting in one right now). They allow us to place our bodies in a static state, so we may put our efforts to other pursuits, such as reading artist books about chairs. Within this selection of books we see the chair take on many forms both physically and allegorically. Bruno Munari’s Seeking Comfort in an Uncomfortable Chair traces the battle between aesthetics and functionality, mass produced and hand crafted, minimal and indulgent. Gabriel Perica’s Puff! speculates on bean bags as a vehicle for cultural revolution. Allan Kaprow documents a two day performance centered around chairs. A Catalogue of Blue Chairs offers simply that.
