“Exclusively made for pride 2021, we are excited to announce the STONEWALL WAS A RIOT AGAINST POLICE BRUTALITY limited edition shirt. This shirt is printed on faded pink Alternative Appeal shirt. Each shirt comes with a free sticker and 10% of each shirt is invested in FOR THE GWORLS, a group that raises money to assist w/ BLACK TRANSGENDER folks’ rent & gender affirmative surgeries.
The design was made using our Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries font made from the protest signage of the group started by Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. The Street Transvestites Action Revolutionaries font, a font made from the hand lettering of a banner displaying STAR, the important project founded by Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P Johnson. This font, like all my fonts are open sourced and available on our website. Every-time this font is used it honors and signals this powerful and important queer and Trans history.” - GenderFail
As a trans Latina, Sylvia Rivera was an outlier among white gay men and lesbian feminists. In 1970, she cofounded the militant group and youth shelter STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) with Black trans activist Marsha P. Johnson (1945-–1992)), providing vulnerable and homeless trans teenagers with food and clothing. https://womenshistory.si.edu/herstory/object/sylvia-rivera
