This journal was published by BOFFO to document its residencies and performances on Fire Island in the summer of 2018. Talking to the Sun at Fire Island, which takes its title from the Frank O’Hara poem, contains photographs and drawings, paintings, and images from performances, but it’s centered around interviews with the artists, discussing their experiences on the island.
The interviews touch on the history, present, and future of Fire Island as an LGBTQ space, reflecting on the opportunities to create art and community afforded by the BOFFO residency while often turning a critical eye to the shortcomings of the island as a safe place for non-cis and non-white residents and visitors.
