Inspired by the 50-year anniversary of Joan Didion’s Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Santa Cruz investigates California’s hedonism, privileged liberalism and aspirational conflicts. Santa Cruz, a coastal city in Northern California, sits at the nexus of Silicon Valley, skateboard culture, surf legacy, and alternative lifestyle. A comedic story of MDMA, witches and Teslas, Santa Cruz continues a portrait of California, which Didion started 50 years ago. The zine features images from the internet posing questions about fixity and narrative in the digital age.
Printed Matter carries Teen Book, an Elk Imprint, featuring the artwork of Nicole Andrews and the writing of Kate Haug. Teen Book and Santa Cruz can be seen as autobiographical companion pieces, 30 years apart.
