Every Construction Looks Like a Ruin at First

An exhibition organized by SE IMPRIME

SE IMPRIME, a publishing initiative led by siblings Carolina and Pablo Castro Zamorano, took shape immediately following the Chilean social uprising of October 2019. For their installation at Printed Matter, they put on view a specially curated collection of posters, flyers and ephemera that emerged from the street protests in Santiago three years ago, tracing the largest popular uprising in contemporary Chilean history through to the present moment with the writing of a new constitution currently underway.

Chilean artists, curators and collaborators will be present onsite to conduct a series of risograph workshops engaged with this activist material and significant moment in cultural history.

DOCUMENT FOR THE FUTURE:

Risograph Workshop

On Friday, October 14 and Sunday, October 16, Pablo César Castro Zamorano of SE IMPRIME will lead two hands-on workshops at Printed Matter that seek to visualize—first with pen and paper, then reproduced in Risograph editions—participants’ graphic and literary expression of ideas, desires and wishes for the world we want.

The collected Riso-printed works of participants will then be bound into a publication during the workshop.

Co-presented with Terri Gordon-Zolov & Eric Zolov, and Sokio (New Latin Wave).

From SE IMPRIME:

This exhibition shows a large part of the editorial work and printed material produced by the collective over the last three years. Together with material provided by close collaborators, a story has been configured, a kind of timeline that tells us through images and publications, the situation of some groups of artists in the face of contemporary Chilean history. Here are posters, prints, zines, postcards and various printed documents reproduced mainly using risography, silkscreen and letterpress

"Immediately after October 18, 2019, we arrived at the Sala de Artes Visuales of the Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral, in the heart of downtown Santiago. We were given the keys to the place to set up there with our tools. We began to print posters, sheets and papers to be circulated immediately in the popular riots that took place two blocks away

We stayed there until December of that year. But the protest continued and continues to this day

Over time, voices became mixed and confused. The course we thought we were going to take didn’t happen

Now located in an old warehouse of the largest flea market in the city, we continue to operate and reveal in some way the sentiments; doing what we do best, printing and publishing new voices, because this began before that October and it will surely last longer than we would like"

En esta exhibición, se muestra gran parte del trabajo editorial y los impresos que se produjeron dentro del colectivo, acumulados desde hace 3 años. Junto al material proporcionado por colaboradores cercanos, se ha configurado un relato, una especie de línea del tiempo que nos relata por medio de imágenes y publicaciones, el sentimiento de algunos grupos de artistas y gestores frente a la historia contemporánea chilena. Acá se dan cita afiches, láminas, zines, postales e impresos diversos reproducidos utilizando serigrafía, risografía, letterpress y grabado, principalmente

"Inmediatamente después del 18 de octubre de 2019, nos juntamos en la Sala de Artes Visuales del Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral, pleno centro de Santiago. Nos pasaron las llaves del lugar para instalarnos ahí con nuestras herramientas. Comenzamos a imprimir afiches, láminas y papeles para que circularan inmediatamente en las concentraciones populares que sucedían a dos cuadras"

Estuvimos ahí hasta diciembre de ese año. Pero la protesta continuó y se mantiene hasta hoy en día

Con el tiempo, las voces se mezclaron y confundieron. El rumbo que pensamos íbamos a tomar, no sucedió

Ahora insertos en un antiguo galpón del mercado de las pulgas más grande la ciudad, seguimos accionando y develando de algún modo los sentires; haciendo lo que sabemos hacer mejor, imprimiendo y publicando nuevas voces, porque esto comenzó antes de aquel octubre y seguramente se va a prolongar más de los que nos gustaría
