Sam Falls, Rubbings and Polaroids

June 22, 2012

We are very pleased to announce an exhibit of drawings by Los Angeles based artist, Sam Falls on Friday the 22nd at our Chelsea Storefront. The artist will be in attendance at the reception from 6-8pm.

The works being shown are ‘studio-rubbings’ in which Falls documents the intricacies and crevices of the floors, walls, and windows of his studio by rubbing pastels on paper over the various textures. The results are bright and slightly abstracted textural reproductions of the space where the artist spends most of his time.

These rubbings stem from a much larger and complex studio practice of producing images and sculptures with a variety of materials affected by the constant and inconsistent variables of time and weather.

Falls’ interest in the photographic process has led him to experiment with a wide variety of alternate methods of producing images through impression methods and time based processes. There will be different sized original pieces available for purchase at a three-tiered price point. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these works will go towards the publishing of a new book, Studio Portrait, from the same body of work published by Printed Matter.

Accompanying the exhibit will be a selection of hand-made books by the artist as well as original Polaroids, which will be featured in the forthcoming title. We will also have in-stock a few currently available artist books by Falls from small artist book publishers Karma, Layflat and Bodega Press.
