Printed Matter, Inc. presents The NY Art Book Fair, New York City’s annual fair devoted to contemporary art books, art catalogues, artists’ books, art periodicals, and ’zines. Over 140 international exhibitors, from major distributors and antiquarian dealers to independent publishers and artists, will participate in the third annual Fair, taking place this year at Phillips de Pury & Company at 450 West 15th Street at 10th Avenue. A ticketed Benefit Preview will take place on Thursday, October 23, 6-9 PM. Admission to the fair and events is FREE. See www.nyartbookfair.com

Exhibitors and participants from New York City to Oslo to Tokyo will be attending the Fair to showcase both contemporary and classic works within the medium of artists’ publications. Back by popular demand, Friendly Fire, a curated zone of artists and independent publishers, features artists and art collectives who self-publish in a free-spirited range of forms from books and ‘zines to CDs and DVDs.

Fun and engaging events including book launches, signings, screenings, and music performances take place each day of the fair. The opening night will feature a performance by Jonathan Monk and running throughout the fair, mfc-michele didier will present I MET, I WENT and I GOT UP, the trilogy by ON KAWARA as well a retrospective of Robert Barry’s artist’s books from 1970 to the present. Electronic Arts Intermix will present a new video program called “Out of Print.” Artists present for book signings include Gary Panter and Marina Abramovic, Terence Koh, Micah Lexier, Matt Keegan, and Michel Gondry, among many others: see www.nyartbookfair.com for the full schedule.

On view will be the exhibition QUEER ZINES, an inclusive historical survey of over 100 publications that examines the continuing transgressive potential of queer and punk zines. Curated by Philip Aarons and AA Bronson, with Alex Gartenfeld. A comprehensive catalogue is available for purchase.

Artists Paul Chan, Matthew Higgs and Anne Collier, and Jonathan Monk have created new limited editions for the fair’s opening night Benefit Preview. Tickets are available at three price tiers and each level of admission is accompanied by a limited edition artwork.

Scott Hug has created the world’s largest zine (28 x 38 inches), which will be exhibited throughout the Fair on a wall next to Printed Matter’s booth. Each of the 18 pages of the untitled zine are silkscreened and fill a specially designed silkscreened portfolio. Untitled is produced in an edition of 2 plus 1 AP. A detail from the zine is pictured above.
