A discreet book of ink drawings with watercolor by New York City based artist Jimbo Blachly. The drawings reveal Blachly’s idiosyncratic personal approach to abstracted landscape-space. Diagrammatic images alternate with compositions that include roads and architectural structures, occasional figures, waterways, and weather events. Like windows opening into an unknown terrain, these exquisite drawings reflect the artist’s working method of imaginative association and improvisation.
Since 2007 Blachly has filled 5.5 X 3.5 inch notebooks with visual notations for painting ideas. What began as a traditional sketchbook activity, quickly became its own project. There are now more than 100 books of drawings with a focused structure of two frames per page, each diptych presenting a slight shift in perspective within an imaginary or observed environment.
Executed primarily in the NYC subway, between April and September 2018, this volume, number 81, is the first to be published. A facsimile of the original, this small gem of an artists book fits in your pocket.
