Catalogue of an exhibition held at Akira Ikeda Gallery (Tokyo) in 1985 featuring collaborative painting, silkscreen, and collage works by Francesco Clemente, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Andy Warhol. Text in English and Japanese.
This show was one in a series of exhibitions featuring the collaborative works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Francesco Clemente. Basquiat began making work with Warhol per the suggestion of his dealer Bruno Bischofberger, who dubbed this artistic practice a Brotherhood of the Traveling Canvas. This book captures the period of the pair’s collaboration with Clemente that lasted until 1984, when Basquiat and Warhol began making work together in secret.
Basquiat, Warhol, and Clemente added their contributions to the works one by one, and their collective intent to create pieces equally split between them—both spatially and conceptually—is apparent. Though their individual styles remain identifiable, the works as wholes are visually cogent.
The catalog contains five color reproductions of the artists’ works, made using acrylic, oil crayons, silkscreen, and collage.
