Named for the constellation Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, Fuego Ofiuco (“Ophiuchus Fire”) details the myth of Asclepius through abstracted imagery printed in Risograph Medium Blue and Florescent Orange.
Asclepius, the Greco-Roman god of medicine, was a healer whose powers grew so great that Zeus, the king of the gods, killed him out of fear that he might make man immortal. In this fanzine, Puiggròs realizes the trajectory of Asclepius’ life through illustrations based on classical architecture, the cosmos, and the relationship between man and serpent. Asclepius is traditionally depicted holding a staff—a symbol of medicine—entwined by a snake, which underpins the presence of the reptile as a motif throughout Fuego Ofiuco, representing both Asclepius as a man and the power of his capabilities.
