Ranging from lightly-penciled, opaquely-inked, digitally-rendered, collaged, painted, and photographed, the perfect-bound, black-and-white Realms II gathers illustrations by a cornucopia of international artists. Curated and edited by Jon Vaughn (and also with his works within), this collection features a broad sweep of artistic style and subject matter: some pictures are densely calligraphic, others deliberately crude and amateurish; one will be cartoonishly gruesome — its successor, rigidly geometric. One spread may depict dissected, surrealist organic bodies (human and other); another will sport a retro Windows XP aesthetic; followed by a deadpan comics series; then some frenetic scribbles and fuzzy gradients; and further along, expect to see a couple of thickly lined baroque compositions. Whether they prefer dense and grisly decayed urbanscapes, droopy, erotic and Miró-esque abstractions, or gruesome monstrosities flaunting drastic contrast, there is surely something in here to appease the palate of any lover of monochrome pictures.
