Lianhuanhua
From the 1920s to 1980s, pulp comics were one of the most popular forms of entertainment in mainland China. These pocket-sized comics, called Lianhuanhua or xiaorenshu, were often adapted from films, television shows, plays, or fables. Copyright infringement was rampant.
During the 1980s, Lianhuanhua went through their final golden era and were printed in quantities that no other comics industry, past or present, can approach. In 985, 8.1 billion Lianhuanhua were printed. Based on population records, that’s more than seven comics per person. With widespread access to movie theaters and television in the 1990s, demand for Lianhuanhua plummeted. Please cherish the relic of this Chinese print culture. - Paradise Systems
