The title of “A Walker in the City” is inspired by a book Esther Levine’s cousin Alfred Kazin wrote in the fifties remembering the New York where he grew up. Levine’s publication is a collage of photographs, each speaking for itself, but put together to form an abstract ensemble which can then, in turn, be examined as individual photographs. Her work is driven by her interest in the endless transformation of the City where she lives. She creates a new narrative drawing connections between textures, open spaces, situations or moments. The textures of the City can be compared to well-worn clothes that carry a rich history and would tell a story if they could talk. She attempts to recreate those stories by attending to the details of the City.
Esther Levine (born in 1970) is an American and German New York-based visual artist and photographer. She began to photograph in 1993 when she went to NY, attended City College and then the Documentary Program at the International Center of Photography. Her work has related to the City she lives in, as well as archival images and footage from family archives. “A Walker in the City” is her first publication with Kodoji Press.
