ACE: Vol. 1, No. 6
Issue 7 of the short-lived successor of the East Village Other, whose 1973 demise signalled the end of the underground newspaper era in New York City. Articles include an exposé on the atrociously misguided NEGRO organization, who were giving free heroin to members of the rehabilitation program, a report on the presence of the National Association for Irish Freedom and the Irish Republican Army at New York City’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, a look at the horrendous air war in Vietnam, an editorial by Screw magazine editor Al Goldstein, a centerfold featuring comix by by Alan Shenker (also known as Yossarian), Roger Tomlinson, and Brad Holland, reviews of Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (which is poorly received by John Gabree) and Stan Brakhage’s The Act of Seeing With One’s Own Eyes, R. Meltzer’s “Wide World of Sports,” an editorial by Richard Kostelanetz, and more.
From our 2016 exhibition Realize Your Desires, of which this work was a part: “Following the landmark Supreme Court decision of 1966 which allowed a more tolerant legal climate for publishers, the ‘Underground Press’ emerged as a site for radical commentary and critique in the US, progressing a number of social movements and shifting the cultural landscape at large. Usually published as weeklies – often in large editions – these publications provided a vibrant space for revolutionary ideas which played out on all fronts of politics and culture, addressing head-on a host of issues including the anti-war movement, black power movement, women’s liberation, gay rights, sexual liberation, and drug culture.”
