This short zine collects several sketches by Karen Alphonso. Alphonso’s drawings isolate elements of a landscape, so that a fountain, a curved bench, or a bunch of unplanted saplings stand in empty space. Shall Not Be ends with a sketch of the Free Speech Monument in Berkley, California, from which the book takes its title: “This soil and the air space extending above it shall not be a part of any nation and shall not be subject to any entity’s jurisdiction.”
