Of Technique: Chance Procedures on Turntable, by sound artist and abstract turntablist Maria Chavez is a how-to manual, documenting the past 10 years of her abstract turntable practice that was entirely developed through Chance Procedures. This book serves as Chavez’s first object about her sound work since 2004.
Some essays are accompanied with illustrations by the artist that show the various hand positions of different vocabulary techniques and act as a guide for the reader who is encouraged to practice creating these techniques on a turntable. Images in the book are meant to be removed so the reader can create their own turntable compositions. By removing the illustrations, the book changes from a how-to manual into a piece of documentation about a specific abstract turntable practice developed over 10 years.
Of Technique was printed locally on recycled paper using non-toxic inks and renewable wind-powered energy.
