_Quarterly is a Brooklyn-based experimental publication focused on the visual and literary arts. Each issue follows a different theme to which the participating artists are asked to respond. For this issue, guest editor and photographer Grant Willing (Swill Children) has gathered an esteemed group of contributors (Ruth Van Beek, Noel Boyt, Daniel Gustav Cramer, Mårten Lange and David Schoerner) to explore abstract and literal ideas associated with the Sea: vastness, freedom, mystery, loss, memory and restlessness, among others.
The issue pairs photographs, maps and a chunky (microscopically re-printed) quotation from what is considered by many to be the greatest exploration of the rolling mass, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick; or The Whale. Consider it the perfect armchair cartographer’s guide to the world’s great open waters. Printed on newsprint, this lovely publication doubles as a fold-out poster.
