Denis Wood has created an atlas unlike any other. Surveying Boylan Heights, his small neighborhood in North Carolina, he subverts the traditional notions of mapmaking to discover new ways of seeing both this place in particular and the nature of place itself. Each map attunes the eye to the invisible, the overlooked, and the seemingly insignificant. From radio waves permeating the air to the location of Halloween pumpkins on porches, Wood searches for the revelatory details in what has never been mapped or may not even be mappable. In his pursuit of a poetics of cartography, the experience of place is primary, useless knowledge is exalted, and representation strives toward resonance. Our perception of maps and how to read them changes as we regard their beauty, marvel at their poetry, and begin to see the neighborhoods we live in anew. Everything Sings weaves a multi-layered story about one neighborhood as well as about the endeavor of truly knowing the places which we call home. Read More

Printed Matter is pleased to announce an exhibition featuring a new set of publications by Maurizio Cattelan from Three Star Books. The show runs January 26th through February 11, 2012. Please join us for an opening at Printed Matter on January 26th, 6-8PM.

Conceived as artworks in the spirit of Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise, the large format and loose-page boxed set surveys Cattelan's career with an autobiographical account that verges on the mythological.

Designed and edited by the artist, these three books: "Die / Die more / Die better / Die again" (2007), "The Three Qattelan" (2010) and "The Taste of Others" (2011) are beautifully produced objects, printed offset in 5 colors (note that "Die / Die more / Die better / Die again" (2007) is printed in 6 colors using Staccato screens with UV inks). Printed Matter is pleased to launch a new 12" LP from Lucky Dragons, Existers, as well as a new zine, Details Magazine, from Sumi Ink Club. Join us for a performance and party on Friday, February 17 th, 6-8 PM, at Printed Matter.

About Existers

EXISTERS is a 21-minute long mini-album of brand-new songs by lucky dragons, produced in cooperation with artist / designer Jesse Hlebo of Swill Children. EXISTERS resist without intervening, subsist without consuming. They are everything about living except life, showing the effects of attention on a thing over time. "EXISTERS" harkens to all things slow, delicate, and sharp--music for drifters, onlookers, and aliens of the everyday. Following on 2011's "SHAPE TAPE", which reduced music to pure harmonics--no concern for beginning, end, or time passing--lucky dragons begin the process of re-inserting the organic textures, playfully intricate handmade rhythms and repetitions that characterized their earlier work, such as 2008's "Dream Island Laughing Language" or 2006's "Widows". By largely replacing the acoustic instrumentation and field-recorded sources of those records with the crackling pulse of modular synthesizer and alien sharpness of spectral processing, "EXISTERS" is both the wall and the push against it, a direct impression, a tribute to the boundary and how the boundary can be crossed.

Printed Matter is pleased to announce a new pair of benefit editions by AA Bronson, co-published with the ICA, London, on the occasion of their exhibition In Numbers: Serial Publications by Artists Since 1955.

The digital prints entitled The Call of The Wild and Self-Disclosures form part of a new series of works relating to Bronson's Queer Spirits, a collaborative publication with artist Peter Hobbs. The works feature a selection of book covers, both well-known and unfamiliar, as a shorthand for wilderness, masculinity, and sexual energy. The themes are played out by park rangers, who monitor the behavior of wild animals, and queer witches, whose deviance lies in their deference to nature. Each digital pigment print on cotton-rag paper is signed and numbered in an edition of 50, measures 42 x 30 cm and retails for $200.00.

Printed Matter is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Steven Leiber. Steven was a longtime advisor, supporter, client and friend of our organization, as well as brother to our Board Member David Leiber. An expert in the field of contemporary artists' books and publications, and the uncharted field of artists’ ephemera, Steven had a knowledge and enthusiasm for this too often marginalized material that was unmatched. His integrity and generosity will be greatly missed in our community and beyond. Our condolences to David and the rest of Steven's family. Read More
