GENERAL INTERNSHIP
Printed Matter's primary goal is to provide the widest possible audience for the appreciation, collection, distribution and understanding of artists' books. In addition to in-store retail and an extensive mail-order order business, Printed Matter hosts a full program of exhibitions related to artists'' publications, and book launches, as well as occasional artists'' presentations, panel discussions, performances and video screenings.
The internship position offers an excellent opportunity to work in a small, yet vital and energetic arts organization. Interns will gain a familiarity with an enormous array of artists'' books and the growing field of artists'' publications, as well as work directly with artists, publishers, art institutions, and clients.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Assisting with the daily and ongoing operations of Printed Matter. Responsibilities include shelving and organizing stock, assisting with different aspects of the mail order business, updating computerized mailing lists and bibliographic records, assisting in mailings, exhibition installations and store displays, providing information over the phone and through correspondences, customer service, as well as performing other bookstore, program, and office duties. In addition, the intern will be asked to take on specific projects from start to finish, such as the development and implementation of promotional and educational material on artists'' publications, target mailings, and thematic store displays.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Interest in the field of artists'' publications and a general knowledge of contemporary art and artists. Attention to detail, good communication skills and ability to thrive in a fast paced work environment are important. Typing and word processing skills are helpful.
ACADEMIC CREDIT AND COMPENSATION:
Interns may receive academic credit and/or work study for their internships, as arranged through their educational institution. Printed Matter is unable to offer a stipend or other financial compensation.
SCHEDULE:
Minimum of eight hours a week, though we can be flexible in scheduling. We ask that interns commit to working for a minimum of two months, though three months or a semester is preferable.

GRANTS AND DEVELOPMENT INTERN
In addition to general intern help, Printed Matter is current seeking a Grants & Development Intern to assist with a range of tasks related to strategizing and realizing efforts to secure funding and expand our membership base.
Under the guidance of a staff member, the Grants & Development Intern will aid with ongoing grant applications from various governmental, private, and public foundations and institutions. The intern will play a role in facilitating the entire grant process, including researching available and applicable grants, maintaining a timeline of approaching grant deadlines, gathering institutional material needed to write and submit grants, as well as conducting follow-up and regular reporting with funders as needed.
The Grants & Development Intern will also help strategize and implement fundraising projects, organize a year-end membership drive, and offer general administrative support to the Finance department, helping to prepare monthly and weekly reports, maintaining records and undertaking other projects as needed.
The internship position offers an excellent opportunity to work in a small, yet vital and energetic arts organization. Interns will gain a familiarity with the growing field of artists' publications, and have the opportunity to gain strong hands-on experience grant writing and overseeing development in the arts non-profit arena.
Applicants should be organized and have excellent writing skills, computer proficiency, and an interest in the arts. Previous experience working in arts administration, grant writing, or with membership campaigns is preferred.
We are looking for a commitment of minimum 2 days a week, though we can be flexible in scheduling. The position is unpaid.

BIBLIOGRAPHIC INTERN
Printed Matter is seeking an intern with exceptional writing skills to assist in the maintenance and development of our inventory for distribution and research purposes.
This unpaid internship entails entering bibliographic data, scanning images, and composing written synopses of the store’s publications. We are constantly receiving shipments of artist’s books and need to keep our online inventory system up-to-date, so the ideal candidate will be able to absorb a book’s content and summarize it accurately, creatively, and relatively quickly.
